A low share of girls at computer sciences and boys at economy sciences in KhNUE

Wed 26.4.2017 5:35 pm

The issue is to attract girls to computer science, and boys to economic science. How to achieve gender balance in the formation of student groups in these fields?

Rank

It is necessary to intensify the educational work with the entrants to solve this problem. For example, during Summer Schools encourage girls to enroll at computer sciences, and boys - economic sciences.

It's a kind of a common opinion that boys are good for science, computers and all that technical stuff and at the same time girls are good for bookkeeping, accounting and things that need a diligent, thorough working out. But both these areas include "light" and "black" sides: you can earn money, experience, knowledge and become someone or you can obtain a trifle and continue to be an also-ran. So, future students must be aware of that. And the second point is that guys don't know exact sciences on the proper level from school.

In our country there are stereotypes that prevent girls from learning from IT specialties. The first stereotype that a woman should dedicate her entire adult life to the upbringing of children. The second stereotype is the separation of training profiles into "female" and "male". On this division begin to be mentioned in school, so at a subconscious level, children divide the subjects into those by which they can be "sexually" engaged, and those that "can not." And the third stereotype is that only technical schools can enter technical colleges.
There is another opinion of most girls that the technical specialty at times complicates the study than anywhere else. Carrying out in schools trainings, telling about computer technologies, it is possible to involve in this sphere more girls. Unfortunately, now in schools this subject, which is called Information Computer Technologies, is very narrow and uninformative (unless, of course, profile schools are taken). Most often this subject in the school is reduced to teaching the child to turn on the computer, use a text editor and an Internet browser.

Gender norms problem arises in situations where we have these standards provided by parents, schools perceive as immutable. When faced with a situation that the girl wants to choose a profession metallurgist, and it is in our understanding of "male" profession, because we do not want the girl won it, we assume discrimination. On the other hand, if a man chooses for a career educator, he can do it, but society will criticize him for this choice, although no sex profession. We ourselves provide her gender.

If the Sports School announces admission exclusively for boys soccer section - is discrimination and if announces admission for boys and girls, and the girls do not go, it is a cultural norm. Because by law all have the right to education.

So, one should not attach to economic and lure or computer specialties, while we do not want in their head to get rid of gender stereotypes. If you want to change this - start with yourself.

The university often has to organize conferences to present to the general public and those who wish to study in both disciplines the importance and the objective that are related in these two disciplines to open their thoughts towards different perspectives
