Both academic and non academic staff struggle to achieve work-life balance, especially with young children

Sun 2.4.2017 2:50 pm

During the internal gender audit workshops, both the groups of academic and non academic staff pointed out the difficulty of balancing work and private life, especially for mothers of young children. The main highlighted issues are the limited flexibility of the working hours (for non academic staff), the scheduling of important meetings at times that are not compatible with childcare, the lack of supporting structures for young parents (e.g., kindergarten within the university/department) and the absence of support for parents coming back to work after parental leaves. This difficulty may represent a serious obstacle for women who become mothers in advancing in their careers, and a critical issue for the institution as well, whose employees are likely to experience potential detrimental effects of work related stress due to the effort to balance their daily life and working routine.

Academic staff has more flexibility in working schedule; however that does not solve the problem.
