Emotional labour falls to nice staff, often women

Wed 3.5.2017 2:04 pm

According to Wikipedia, emotional labour means " the process of managing feelings and expressions to fulfill the emotional requirements of a job.[1][2] More specifically, workers are expected to regulate their emotions during interactions with customers, co-workers and superiors." For example airline stewardess has to be nice to customers despite they might be very demanding or even intoxicated. In university teaching or thesis supervision, we as teachers should be emphathetic and understanding towards students, although sometimes it is really hard. Some students seem not to understand simple guidelines, or meet deadlines, or fulfill requirements for various reasons. However, not all staff teaching students is willing to be emphathetic or even want to supervise students to facilitate thesis writing. They may give very harsh feedback to a single student in front of the whole class, or kick them from the course. Often these students then try to find a emphathetic teacher to supervise them or teach them, and often these teachers are women. Some students may have serious personal, learning or psychological problems, which require some specialist help but instead they tell about these problems to emphatetic teacher tutors who then try to listen and perhaps start to supervise these "problem" students. The same problem pertains in administrative work. Some staff members are not willing to sit in different kind of working groups or do required duties, since they want to focus on research or have other engagements. Instead of distributing the work evenly to all staff members, some nice persons, often women, take these duties in expense of their own careers and without complaining.

The goal is to let the emotional labor work in ISS unit to go to both male and female. Currently there is no administration staff in ISS unit. Thus, the emotional labor work normally goes to differnt staff member, but mostly to female. Male staff members should be volunteers to do the emotional labor work also the same as female colleagues do. Meanwhile female staff members should also suggest male colleague to do some emotional labor work. At  ISS unit meetings, the unit head can also suggest the staff members to take some emitonal labor work in the ISS unit, no matter male or female.
