Exclusion of international students

Sat 29.4.2017 1:54 pm

The internal gender audit at the Department of Information Systems (IS) has revealed that international students tend to feel excluded by local students from group work. In case groups can be formed by students, German students tend to form groups with other German students. If groups are assigned by a lecturer and international students appear to be a minority in a group dominated by German students, the international students tend to be excluded from group discussions (German students are often hesitant to speak English).

- Match international students with local students in groups at the beginning of the semester, and encourage them to meet, laugh, talk, listen, and participate in whatever clubs, teams or activities they wish.

- Incorporate the required activities to organise and support the buddy programme into the routine tasks of the IS student council and study coordinator to ensure sustainability.

This problem appears in many universities. Local students exclude international students due to language barrier and because they were not introduced to each other well. Most of the times students form a group with people they know and trust as they reach a common result. However, for this reason international students are left apart as teachers do not take enough time to introduce them with local students and do not encourage them to get to know each other. As it was mentioned before, sometimes, the groups are assigned by teachers but in this case, teacher should monitor the group work and help if the international student is not involved to the group work well.

International students are also often excluded because the local students perceive them as "less serious", especially if they are only on an exchange program. In that case the locals fear that their work/results will suffer if they are put in a group with foreign students.
