Support for working mothers

Thu 11.5.2017 2:48 pm

Parental duties were considered as the main barrier for career development of female employees. This was described as problematic for academic staff, where the competition between researchers can be directly measured (e.g. in term of publications within a certain period of time). Thus, the support for working mothers needs to be improved, making it easier particularly for women to develop a career while having kids.  “Yes, I think there are some offerings, like child care with the nursery. But I would say it is still at a very low level”.

Rank

Sdet-up a fund that pays for babysitter services in case of work events in the evening or on weekends outside the normal daycare hours. Specially in Liechstenstein and Switzerland babysitter services are very expensive and often hinder parent to attend such work events. A fund that each employee can use to apply for financial support would help. This could be also extended to cases where additional child care is needed (e.g. in case of travel).

This also touches me personally as a mother of three. How to make the balance between work and parenting? How to be a good mother and a good worker the same time? Challenging :)

I always had this dilemma. Work life balance is especially important question in families where parents are researchers. Some working tasks such as writing of articles usually are being done  during leisure time, at home, not in the office. That means... stealing time from the family...

I would go a bit further and develop a programme for support of young families that allows them to share the duty of parenthood and allows father to take responsibility for childcare, too. The initial idea still makes the implicit assumption that childcare is on the shoulders of young mothers (and that they need support in consolidating with career and work)
